Ex Sermónibus sancti Lauréntii Iustiniáni epíscopi
(Sermo 8, in festo Purificationis Beatæ Mariæ Virginis: Opera, 2, Venetiis 1751, 38-39)
Maria conservabat omnia in corde suo
Conferénte secum María de ómnibus quæ legéndo, audiéndo, vidéndo cognóverat, o quantum crescébat in fide, augebátur méritis, sapiéntia illustrabátur magis magísque caritátis cremabátur incéndio! Ex redivíva síquidem sacramentórum cæléstium reseratióne promóta, complebátur lætítia, Spíritu fecundabátur nímium, dirigebátur in Deum, et húmilis custodiebátur in se. Tales prorsus divínæ grátiæ sunt proféctus, ut de imis élevent ad summa, et de claritáte in claritátem transfórment. Beáta plane mens Vírginis, quæ, per inhabitántem Spíritum ac magistérium, Verbi Dei semper in ómnibus parébat império. Non sensu próprio, non suo ducebátur arbítrio; sed quod intus sapiéntia innuébat ad fidem, foris hoc córporis ministério peragébat. Decébat útique divínam Sapiéntiam, quæ sibi ad habitándum domum ædificábat Ecclésiæ, ut de legis custódia, de purificatióne mentis, de humilitátis norma, et de spiritáli oblatióne, Maríæ Sanctíssimæ médio uterétur.
Ipsam tu, o fidélis ánima, imitáre. Ut enim spiritáliter purificéris et a delictórum váleas emundári contágiis, in templum cordis tui ingrédere. Ibi afféctum in cunctis quæ ágimus Deus pótius atténdit, quam opus. Quámobrem, sive per contemplatiónis stúdium mente excédimus Deo atque vacámus, seu per virtútum increménta et commendabílium negotiórum ópera próximis nostris sóbrii esse satágimus, id táliter perficiámus, ut tantum Christi cáritas úrgeat nos. Hæc plane est spiritális purificatiónis accépta oblátio, quæ non in manufácto, sed in cordis persólvitur templo, in quod Dóminus Christus gratánter ingréditur.

마리아는 이 모든 일을 마음속에 간직하였다
마리아는 읽고 듣고 본 것들을 모두 마음속에 간직함으로써 얼마나 그의 믿음이 자라고 공로가 쌓이고 지혜가 밝아졌으며 사랑의 불꽃으로 타올랐는지 모릅니다. 과연 마리아는 천상 신비를 받아들임으로써 기쁨에 충만하고 성신으로 풍요해졌으며 하느님께로 인도되면서도 스스로는 겸손한 모습을 지니도록 보호를 받았습니다. 이것은 마리아를 가장 낮은 데서 가장 높은 데로 들어 높이고 빛나는 모습에서 더욱 빛나는 모습으로 바꾸어 주는 하느님의 은총이었음이 분명합니다. 성신이 내재하시며 가르치시는 대로 모든 일에 있어서 하느님의 말씀의 명령에 순종하였기에 동정녀의 마음은 참으로 복되었습니다. 마리아는 자신의 뜻을 따라 멋대로 행동하지 않고 오직 내적으로 믿음을 위한 지혜가 지시하는 대로 외적으로도 육신의 봉사를 다하였습니다. 하느님의 지혜는 몸소 거처하실 교회의 집을 지으시면서 계명을 지키고 마음을 깨끗이 하며 겸손의 규범과 영신적 봉헌의 모범을 지극히 거룩한 마리아 안에서 발견하도록 섭리하셨습니다.
신자 여러분, 마리아를 본받으십시오. 영신적으로 깨끗해지고 죄의 더러움을 씻기 위하여 마음의 장막으로 들어가십시오. 거기서 우리가 행하는 모든 일에 있어서 하느님께서는 일보다 마음을 중시하십니다. 그러므로 우리는 관상의 노력으로 이성을 초월하여 하느님만을 섬기든지 덕행을 쌓고 권장되는 활동으로 이웃에게 봉사하든지 다만 그리스도의 사랑이 우리를 재촉하도록 해야 할 것입니다. 이것이야말로 하느님 듯에 맞는 영식적 봉헌이요, 손으로 지은 장막이 아니라 마음의 장막에서 이루어지는 일이며, 이 마음의 장막으로 주 그리스도께서 기꺼이 들어오시는 것입니다.

Mary kept all these things in her heart
As Mary pondered all she had learned from reading and from what she had heard and seen, how greatly did she increase in faith, advance in merit and become enlightened with wisdom! More and more she was consumed with burning love. Drawing life and inspiration from the heavenly mysteries which were being unlocked for her, she was filled with joy; she became alive with the Spirit, she was guided towards God and was kept humble in herself. The effects of divine grace are such indeed that they raise one from the depths to the heights, and transform one in an ever greater degree of glory. Entirely blessed was the mind of the Virgin which, through the direction of the Spirit dwelling in her, ever obeyed the command of the Word of God in all things. She was governed not by her own judgement or opinions, but she outwardly performed through her body whatever wisdom had indicated inwardly to her faith. It was surely fitting that divine Wisdom, which had built the house of the Church for its abode, should use most holy Mary as its instrument, where the observance of the law, purification of the heart, the doctrine of humility and spiritual offering were concerned.
Imitate her, O faithful soul. Enter into the temple of your heart that you may be purified in spirit and cleansed of the pollution of your sins. In everything we do God considers our disposition rather than our actions. And so, whether we retire mentally to God in earnest contemplation and remain at rest or whether we are intent on being of service to those around us with good works and worthy undertakings, let our object be that we are motivated only by love of Christ. So the really acceptable offering of purification of the spirit is that which is rendered not in a man-made temple but in the temple of the heart, where Christ the Lord is pleased to enter.

瑪利亞把她所讀所聽見的一切，都默存心中，所以她信仰日堅，功德日增，智慧日廣，她的愛火亦愈熾愈烈。她常重溫啟示給她的天上奧跡，而滿心喜樂；她接受聖神無比恩寵，終生謙卑自居，一心嚮往天主。這完全是天主恩寵的功能：將一個人從最卑微處，提升到最高貴的地位；將一個人轉變，使他具備出羣的聖德。貞女的心靈如何幸福！她由於聖神的居住和領導，事事服從天主聖言的命令。她從不為私情或私見所左右；凡是智慧在內心對她的信仰所指示的，她必身體力行。天主的智慧，即那在教會中為自己建立寓所的智慧，藉瑪利亞的幫助，以求得法律的遵守、心靈的淨化、謙遜的理想，及屬神的祭獻，是很合適的。
忠信的靈魂哪！你要效法瑪利亞。你該進入你內心的宮殿，好洗淨你的污穢，滌除你的罪污。天主所注意的，不是我們的工作本身，而是我們的善志。因此，不論我們默禱，與天主交談，或做某些善工，去為我們的弟兄服務，我們的主要動機，是因基督的愛催迫我們。這就是一個屬神的、純潔的、為天主所悅納的祭獻。這種祭獻的舉行，不是在人手所建的殿裡，而是在人的內心──吾主基督所樂意進入的聖殿。
