The obvious choice for patron of this blog would be Our Lady under the title of the Immaculate Conception. After all, she is the patroness of Korea and the name given to the mother-church of Korea : that is the Cathedral Church of Virgin Mary of the Immaculate Conception, better known as Myeongdong Cathedral. Another possible patron would be another Marian dogma, this time the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The date, 15 August, is the same as the secular calendar's National Liberation Day in Korea. A good reminder : just as we recall the liberation of Korea from tyranny, we also recall the far greater liberation of the resurrection, wherein we will once again be reunited with our bodies. By a singular grace, Mary was never parted from her body when she entered heavenly glory.
As good as these two choices are (as would be myriad others), I've settled on Mary under another title : Our Lady of Solitude (or Our Lady of the Lonely). Why? I think the foreigner experience in Korea can often be a lonely one. And even when it is not, the modern forces that allow us to be here have made people -both foreigners and Koreans alike- alone in their crowd. Who better to intercede on our behalf during these quiet and lonely struggles?
