Ex Exhortatióne Orígenis presbýteri ad martýrium
(Nn. 41-42: PG 11, 618-619)
Socii passionum Christi, socii erunt et consolationis
Si a morte transívimus ad vitam, eo quod ab infidelitáte ad fidem transiérimus, ne mirémur si nos odit mundus. Nemo enim qui a morte ad vitam non transíerit, sed remánserit in morte, eos amáre potest qui transiérunt a tenebrósa mortis, ut ita dicam, domo ad ædifícia lucis vitæ, vivis ex lapídibus compléta.
Pro nobis pósuit ánimam suam Iesus, et nos ígitur ponámus eam, non dicam pro ipso, sed pro nobis, opínor autem pro iis qui martýrio nostro ædificándi sunt.
Adest nobis tempus, christiáne, gloriándi. Ait enim: Non solum autem, sed et gloriámur in tribulatiónibus, sciéntes quia tribulátio patiéntiam operátur; patiéntia autem probatiónem; probátio autem spem; spes vero non confúndit. Tantum cáritas Dei diffúsa sit in córdibus nostris per Spíritum Sanctum.
Si, sicut abúndant passiónes Christi, ita per Christum abúndat consolátio, summa alacritáte passiónes Christi suscipiámus, et abúndent illæ in nobis, si abundántem consolatiónem appétimus, quam consequéntur omnes qui lugent; forte non ex æquo: si enim æquális consolátio esset, non esset scriptum: Sicut abúndant passiónes Christi in nobis, sic abúndat et consolátio nostra.
Qui sócii passiónum sunt, proportióne passiónum quas cum Christo patiúntur, sócii erunt et consolatiónis. Hæc ab illo díscitis, qui confidénter dixit: Sciéntes quod sicut sócii passiónum estis, sic éritis et consolatiónis.
Ait autem per Prophétam Deus: Témpore accépto exaudívi te, et in die salútis adiúvi te. Quodnam ígitur áliud tempus accéptius quam cum, propter nostram erga Deum in Christo pietátem, sub custódiam in pompa incedéntes in mundo, sed triumphántes pótius quam triumpháti, abdúcimur?
Mártyres enim Christi cum ipso exspóliant principátus et potestátes, cum ipso triúmphant illos, ut cum sócii fúerint passiónum eius, et sic in iis quæ patiéndo fórtiter gessit, partem hábeant. Quæ autem ália perínde dies salútis est ac illa qua hinc tali modo excéditis?
Sed, óbsecro, némini date ullam offensiónem, ut non vituperétur ministérium nostrum, sed in ómnibus exhibeátis vosmetípsos sicut Dei minístros in multa patiéntia, dicéntes: Et nunc quæ est exspectátio mea, nonne Dóminus?

여러분은 그리스도의 고난을 같이 당하고 있으니 그의 위로도 같이 받을 것입니다
우리가 불신앙에서 신앙으로 옮겨 감으로써 죽음에서 생명으로 옮겨 갔다면 세상이 우리를 미워하는 것은 놀라운 일이 아닙니다. 죽음에서 생명으로 옮겨 가지 않고 아직 죽음에 머물러 있는 사람은 죽음의 어둠에서 나와 소위 말하는 살아 있는 돌로 지은 생명의 빛이 비추는 건물에 들어간 이들을 사랑할 수 없습니다. 예수께서 “우리를 위해 생명을 바치셨으니” 우리도 그분을 위해 우리 생명을 바칩시다. 그런데 우리가 생명을 바치는 것은 그리스도를 위해서가 아니고 우리 자신을 위해서 또 우리의 순교를 보고 감화를 받게 될 이들을 위해서입니다.
그리스도인들이여, 우리가 자랑할 시간이 왔습니다. 성서는 말해 줍니다. “그뿐만 아니라 우리는 고통에 대해 자랑합니다. 고통은 인내를 가져 오고 인내는 시련을 이겨내는 끈기를 가지고 오며 끈기는 희망을 가지고 온다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 이 희망은 우리를 실망시키지 않습니다. 우리가 받은 성령께서 우리의 마음속에 하느님의 사랑을 부어 주셨기 때문입니다.” “우리가 그리스도와 함께 당하는 고난이 많은 것처럼 그리스도로 말미암아 받는 위로도 많습니다.” 그러므로 그리스도의 고난을 기쁘게 받아들입시다. 우리가 많은 위로를 받기 원한다면 많은 고난을 받아들여야 합니다. 애통하는 이들도 위로를 받겠지만 아마도 같은 정도로 받지 못할 것입니다. 다 똑같은 정도의 위로를 받는다고 하면사도 바오로는 다음과 같이 말하지 않았을 것입니다. “우리가 그리스도와 함께 당하는 고난이 많은 것처럼 그리스도로 말미암아 받는 위로도 많습니다.”
그리스도의 고난에 참여하는 이들은 참여하는 고난의 정도에 따라 위로에도 참여할 것입니다. 확신에 찬 사도의 다음 말씀에서 이것을 배울 수 있습니다. “우리가 그리스도와 함께 당하는 고난이 많은 것처럼 그리스도로 말미암아 받는 위로도 많습니다.” 하느님께서는 예언자들을 통해서 말씀하십니다. “은총의 시기에 나는 너의 소원을 들어주었고 구원의 날에 너를 도와주었다.” 그런데 우리가 그리스도 안에서 하느님께 대한 봉사 때문에 경비병에 둘러싸여 패배자처럼 하지 않고 승리자처럼 엄숙히 사형대로 끌려 나가는 날보다 더 은총이 넘치는 때가 있겠습니까?
그리스도의 순교자들은 그리스도와 함께 으뜸들과 권세들을 완전히 눌러 이기고 그리스도와 함께 승리를 거둡니다. 그들은 그분의 고난에 참여하므로 그분이 고통을 통하여 얻은 것에도 참여하게 됩니다. 세상을 하직하는 날말고 구원의 날이 또 있단 말입니까? “나는 간청합니다. 우리가 하는 전도 사업이 비난받지 않기 위해서 여러분은 사람들의 비위를 상하게 하는 일은 조금도 하지 마십시오. 오히려 온갖 인내심으로 무슨 일이나 하느님의 일꾼으로서 일하십시오.” 다음의 말씀을 여러분 자신의 것으로 삼으십시오. “이제 내 바랄 것이, 주여, 무엇이오니까? 내 소망, 그것은 당신께 있나이다.”

Sharing in Christ's sufferings, they will also share in his consolation
If we have passed out of death into life by passing out of unbelief into faith, we should not be surprised if the world hates us. For no one who does not pass from death to life but remains in death can love those who have passed out of this dark house of death, as it could be called, to the building that is lit by the light of life, built up of living stones.
Jesus laid down his life for us, and so we should lay down our lives, I do not say for him, but for ourselves, or rather, I suppose, for those who are going to be built up by our martyrdom.
Christians, the time has come for us to boast. For we read: ‘That is not all we can boast about; we can boast about our sufferings. These sufferings bring patience, as we know, and patience brings perseverance, and perseverance brings hope, and this hope is not deceptive. So much has the love of God been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.’
If, as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in consolation too, then let us accept Christ’s sufferings gladly. Let us share in them abundantly, if we are looking for abundant consolation. And this is what those who mourn will receive, although perhaps not in equal measure. If the consolation were exactly equal for each person, then Paul would not have written: ‘As the sufferings of Christ abound in us, so also our consolation abounds.’
Those who share in his sufferings will also share in consolation, in proportion to the sufferings that they share with Christ. You learn this from the apostle’s confident words: ‘You know that as you share in sufferings, you will also share in consolation.’
God said through his prophet: ‘In a time of favour I have answered you, in a day of salvation I have helped you.’ What, then, could be a more favourable time than the day when we are led off under guard, paraded before the world, but triumphant rather than the objects of a triumph, and this because of our faithful service of God in Christ?
For Christian martyrs in the company of Christ completely overcome the principalities and powers; together with him they triumph over them; sharing in his sufferings, they also share in the victories that he has won by his courage in suffering. What other day of salvation is there than the day that we depart from the world in this way?
But, I beg you, put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, but as servants of God commend yourselves through great endurance. You should make your own the words: ‘What do I wait for now, except the Lord?’
