⛪ Sanctæ Dei Genetricis Mariæ, Sollemnitas 【Anno A】
우리의 제1독서에서 두 번, 그리고 화답송에서 한 번 우리는 하느님의 얼굴에 대해 듣습니다.
Twice in our first reading and once in our Psalm we hear of God’s face.
“주님께서 그 얼굴을 우리 위에 비추시고”,
“주님께서 그 얼굴을 들어 우리를 굽어보시며”,
“그 얼굴의 빛을 우리에게 비추소서.”
이 표현들은 하느님의 얼굴이 우리에게 향해 있다는 믿음을 드러냅니다.
May the Lord make His face to shine upon you.
The Lord lift up His countenance upon you.
Let His face shed its light upon us.
물론 유다인들은 하느님의 얼굴을 보고도 살아남을 수 있는 이는 없다고 믿었습니다. 그래서 우리가 하느님께서 당신의 얼굴을 드러내신다, 우리 위에 그 얼굴을 비추신다고 말할 때, 우리는 곧바로 하느님께서 당신의 아들을 통해 그렇게 하신다고 생각하고 믿게 됩니다. 하느님께서는 우리에게 당신의 얼굴을 보여 주고자 하셨기에, 마리아의 태중에서 우리의 인간성을 취하시고, 사람이 되셨습니다.
Of course the Jews believed that no one could see the face of God and live. So when we speak of God revealing His face, shining His face upon us, we directly think, speak, believe that God does this through His Son. It is because God wished to show us His face that He took our humanity, that He took on human flesh in the womb of Mary.
우리는 서로를 얼굴로 알아봅니다. 코로나 시기에 얼굴에 마스크를 쓰고 다녀야 했던 것이 얼마나 힘든 일이었는지 기억하실 겁니다. 그 시기에 시작된 많은 관계들은, 한 해가 다 지나서야 비로소 상대방의 얼굴을 제대로 보게 되었습니다. 우리는 눈 주변의 작은 부분만 보고 사람을 알아보는 데 익숙해져 있었기 때문입니다. 이처럼 하느님께서 그리스도 안에서 당신의 얼굴을 드러내실 때, 하느님께서는 당신이 어떤 분이신지를 보여 주십니다. 이제 우리는 하느님에 대해 단지 “말씀으로만” 아는 것이 아니라, 그리스도의 인간성 안에서 하느님의 사랑을 보게 됩니다. 하느님께서 길 잃은 이를 찾으신다는 것, 고통받는 이를 치유하신다는 것, 고통 속에 함께 머무르신다는 것, 죽음을 이기고 새 생명을 주신다는 것을 우리는 그리스도 안에서 봅니다. 하느님의 사랑에는 끝이 없다는 것도 드러납니다.
We recognize one another by our faces. Its one of the terrible things about COVID, when we had to walk around with those silly masks on our faces. A lot of relationships that we started in that year it was only at the end of the year that we really saw what that person looked like. We were so used to seeing this little band around the eyes. So when God reveals His face to us in Christ, God shows us who He is. No longer do we believe things about God because He tells them to us. But in the humanity of Christ, God reveals His love for us. God reveals that He seeks out those who stray. That He heals those who are afflicted. That He suffers with those who suffer. That He conquers death and brings new life. That God’s love has so end.
우리는 하느님의 성육하신 아드님의 인간적인 얼굴 안에서 하느님을 알아봅니다. 바로 그렇기 때문에 우리는 복되신 마리아를 단순히 “예수님의 어머니”가 아니라 “하느님의 어머니”라고 부릅니다. 이는 구유에 누워 있는 그 아기에 대해 우리가 무엇을 믿는지를 말해 줍니다. 그분은 참으로 인간이시며, 어머니의 태에서 육신을 취하셨지만, 동시에 참으로 하느님이시라는 믿음입니다.
We recognize God in the humanity, the human face of His Incarnate Son. And that’s why we call our Blessed Mother the “Mother of God” and not just “the Mother of Jesus”. We are saying something about that baby lying in the manger: that He is, yes, fully human, taking His flesh from the womb of His mother, but He is also fully, truly, God Himself.
그래서 성모님의 가장 높고 영광스러운 칭호는, 사실 성모님 자신에 대한 말이기보다는 성모님의 아드님에 대한 우리의 믿음을 드러내는 호칭입니다. 하느님의 얼굴이 성모님 위에 특별한 방식으로 비추었다는 그 관계는 유일무이합니다. 그러나 오늘 제2독서에서 사도 바오로가 말하듯이, 여러분과 저는 양자로 받아들여진 하느님의 자녀들입니다. 하느님의 아드님의 영이 우리 마음에 부어져, 우리도 하느님을 “아버지”라고 부를 수 있게 되었습니다. 그렇다면 우리가 그리스도의 영을 나누어 받았다면, 어떤 의미에서 우리는 이 세상에서 하느님의 얼굴을 드러내는 존재가 됩니다. 우리는 서로에게 하느님의 얼굴을 보여 줍니다.
So Our Lady’s most exalted title is really a title that reflects what we believe about her Son. And that relationship that Our Lady has with her Son, the way that God’s face shone upon her in a very particular way is of course unique. But as St Paul tells us in our second reading today that you and I are adopted children, adopted sons and daughters of God. We have had that spirit of the Son of God poured into our hearts so we too can call God our Father. But if we share that spirit of Christ, then in a sense you and I reveal God’s face in this world. We reveal God’s face to one another.
우리는 서로에게 하느님의 사랑과 돌봄, 용서와 현존을 구체적으로 드러내고, 말하자면 그것에 살과 피를 입힙니다. 우리가 우리의 삶 안에서 그리스도를 다시 태어나게 함으로써, 사람들이 우리 얼굴 안에서 하느님의 얼굴을 볼 수 있게 되기 때문에, 우리는 이 새로운 은총의 해, 2026년을 희망과 신뢰 안에서 맞이할 수 있습니다. 앞으로 12개월 동안 어떤 기쁨과 어떤 슬픔을 만나게 되더라도, 우리는 하느님의 얼굴이 우리 위에 비추고 있음을 알고 나아갑니다. 서로를 통해 하느님께서 우리를 굽어보시고, 우리 마음에 부어 주신 아드님의 영으로 말미암아, 우리는 “아빠, 아버지!” 하고 부르짖습니다.
We make, as it were, concrete, take flesh, God’s love, God’s care, God’s forgiveness, God’s presence to one another. And because you and I are able to in a sense, bring Christ to birth in this world in our own lives, so that people can see the face of God in our own faces, that’s why we have hope, we have confidence going into this new year of grace 2026. Whatever we face, the joys and the sorrows of the next 12 months we do so with that face of God shining on us. God lifting up His countenance upon us through one another because we share that spirit of Sonship, that spirit of God’s Son poured into our hearts, crying “Abba! Father!”
