Nomen Iesu, splendor prædicantium
Nomen Iesu est splendor prædicántium, eo quod luminóso splendóre annuntiáre et audíre fáciat verbum suum. Et unde putas in toto orbe tanta et tam súbita atque fervens fídei lux, nisi de prædicáto Iesu? Nonne et huius nóminis luce ac sapóre Deus nos vocávit in admirábile lumen suum? Quibus illuminátis, et in lúmine isto vidéntibus lumen, mérito Apóstolus dicat: Erátis aliquándo ténebræ, nunc autem lux in Dómino: ut fílii lucis ambuláte.
Proínde hoc nomen declarári debet ut lúceat, non latére. Nec tamen in prædicatióne proférri debet corde sórdido vel ore pollúto, sed in vase recondéndum et proferéndum elécto.
Unde Dóminus de Apóstolo ait: Vas, inquit, electiónis est mihi iste, ut portet nomen meum coram géntibus et régibus et fíliis Israel. Vas, inquit, electiónis, ubi liquor dulcíssimus venális expósitus, ut próvocet ad bibéndum, dum rútilat et splendéscit in vasis eléctis: ut portet, inquit, nomen meum.
Nam sicut igne succénso, purgátis agris, consúmitur aríditas et inutílitas véprium et spinárum, et sicut in ortu solárium radiórum, pulsis ténebris, látitant fures, noctívagi fossorésque domórum; sic lingua Pauli pópulis prædicánte, velut magno tonítruo perstrepénte, velut igne veheméntius irruénte, velut sole clárius oriénte, consumebátur infidélitas, disperíbat fálsitas, elucescébat véritas, ad instar ceræ veheméntis ignis incéndio liquefáctæ.
Nomen enim Iesu circumferébat verbis, epístolis, miráculis et exémplis. Laudábat enim nomen Iesu assídue et collaudábat illud in confessióne.
Hoc ínsuper nomen coram régibus et géntibus et fíliis Israel portábat Apóstolus tamquam lumen et illuminábat pátrias, et clamábat ubíque illud: Nox præcéssit, dies autem appropinquávit. Abiciámus ergo ópera tenebrárum et induámur arma lucis. Sicut in die honéste ambulémus. Et monstrábat ómnibus lucérnam ardéntem atque lucéntem super candelábrum, annúntians in omni loco Iesum, et hunc crucifíxum.

예수의 이름은 설교자들의 광휘입니다. 그 이름은 설교자의 말과 듣는 사람의 말을 광휘로 비추어 줍니다. 예수의 이름 때문이 아니라면 어떻게 신앙이 그렇게도 밝게 신속히 또 힘있게 온 세상에 전파되었다고 생각합니까? 하느님께서는 우리들도 이 이름이 지닌 빛과 감미로움으로 “당신의 놀라운 빛 가운데로 부르시지 않았습니까?” 그래서 빛 가운데서 빛을 보고 조명된 이들에게 사도 바오로가 하는 다음 말씀은 적합한 말씀입니다. “여러분이 전에는 어둠의 세계에서 살고 있습니다. 그러니 빛의 자녀답게 살아야 합니다.”
우리는 이 이름을 가리면 안됩니다. 널리 빛을 발하도록 선포해야 합니다. 그러나 전파할 때 불순한 마음이나 불결한 입으로 선포해서는 안되고 뽑히운 잔 속에 안전하게 보관하고 또 전수해야 합니다.
주님은 사도에 관해 말씀하십니다. “이는 이스라엘 백성들에게 널리 전파할 사람이다.” 사도란 “뽑히운 잔”이라고 주님이 말씀하십니다. 그 잔에는 매우 향긋한 술이 판매용으로 전시되고 그 술은 뽑히운 잔 속에서 반짝이고 빛나면서 사람들의 입맛을 돋구어 줍니다. 그래서 “이것은 내 이름을 전파하기 위해서”라고 주님은 덧붙이십니다.
들판에 불을 질러 잡초를 제거할 때 건조하고 쓸모 없는 덤불과 가시 떨기는 타서 없어집니다. 태양이 떠 빛살이 어둠을 몰아낼 때면 도둑이나 밤중의 배회자나 강도들은 몸을 숨깁니다. 이처럼 바오로가 사람들에게 복음을 선포했을 때 그것은 마치 요란한 천둥소리나 굉장한 위력으로 타오르는 불 또는 이전보다 더 찬란히 떠오르는 태양 같아서 불신앙은 파괴되고 그것은 사라졌으며, 진리는 마치 활활 타오르는 거대한 촛불처럼 온 세상을 비추어 나갔습니다.
바오로는 말과 편지와 기적과 표양으로써 예수의 이름을 전했습니다. 그는 예수의 이름을 끊임없이 찬미했고 그를 고백하면서 그 이름에다 영광을 돌렸습니다. 더욱이 바오로는 그 이름을 빛처럼 “이방인들과 제왕들과 이스라엘 백성들에게 전했습니다.” 바오로는 “밤이 거의 새어 낮이 가까웠습니다. 그러니 어둠의 행실을 벗어 버리고 빛의 갑옷을 입읍시다 …… 언제나 대낮으로 생각하고 단정하게 살아갑시다.”라고 말했습니다. 그는 어디에서든지 예수님을 특히 십자가에 달리신 예수님을 전파하면서 그분을 촛대 위에서 활활 타며 빛나는 빛처럼 모든 이에게 보여 주었습니다.
그래서 그리스도의 교회의 신부인 교회는 바오로의 증언에 기초하여 예언자와 더불어 즐거워 하며 말합니다. “하느님, 젊어서부터 날 가르치셨으니, 묘하신 그 일들을 이때껏 일컫나이다.” 즉, 언제나 전하리이다. 예언자는 역시 다음과 같이 권합니다. “주께 노래불러 드려라. 그 이름을 찬미하라. 나날이 구원하심을 널리 퍼뜨려라.” 즉, 구세주 예수를 선포하여라.

The name of Jesus is the glory of preachers
The name of Jesus is the glory of preachers, because the shining splendour of that name causes his word to be proclaimed and heard. And how do you think such an immense, sudden and dazzling light of faith came into the world, if not because Jesus was preached? Was it not through the brilliance and sweet savour of this name that God called us into his marvellous light? When we have been enlightened, and in that same light behold the light of heaven, rightly may the apostle Paul say to us: Once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord, walk as children of light.
So this name must be proclaimed, that it may shine out and never be suppressed. But it must not be preached by someone with sullied mind or unclean lips, but stored up and poured out from a chosen vessel.
That is why our Lord said of Saint Paul: He is a chosen instrument of mine, the vessel of my choice, to carry my name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel. In this chosen vessel there was to be a drink more pleasing than earth ever knew, offered to all mankind for a price they could pay, so that they would be drawn to taste of it. Poured into other chosen vessels, it would grow and radiate splendour. For our Lord said: He is to carry my name.
When a fire is lit to clear a field, it burns off all the dry and useless weeds and thorns. When the sun rises and darkness is dispelled, robbers, night-prowlers and burglars hide away. So when Paul’s voice was raised to preach the Gospel to the nations, like a great clap of thunder in the sky, his preaching was a blazing fire carrying all before it. It was the sun rising in full glory. Infidelity was consumed by it, false beliefs fled away, and the truth appeared like a great candle lighting the whole world with its brilliant flame.
By word of mouth, by letters, by miracles and by the example of his own life, Saint Paul bore the name of Jesus wherever he went. He praised the name of Jesus at all times, but never more than when bearing witness to his faith.
Moreover, the Apostle did indeed carry this name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel as a light to enlighten all nations. And this was his cry wherever he journeyed: The night is passing away, the day is at hand. Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armour of light; let us conduct ourselves honourably as in the day. Paul himself showed forth the burning and shining light set upon a candlestick, everywhere proclaiming Jesus, and him crucified.
And so the Church, the bride of Christ strengthened by his testimony, rejoices with the psalmist, singing: O God, from my youth you have taught me, and I still proclaim your wondrous deeds. The psalmist exhorts her to do this, as he says: Sing to the Lord, and bless his name, proclaim his salvation day after day. And this salvation is Jesus, her saviour.
