In Nativitate Domini
오늘 우리는 성탄 이야기의 한가운데로 들어갑니다. 그리스도께서는 이미 탄생하셨고 첫 방문객들을 맞이하셨습니다. 동방 박사들은 아직 길 위에 있습니다. 그러나 우리가 초등학교 때부터 잘 알고 있듯이, 이 이야기는 훨씬 이전, 곧 대천사 가브리엘이 마리아에게 나타나 하느님의 아드님을 잉태하게 될 것이라고 알린 순간에서 시작됩니다. 이 이야기는 너무도 익숙하기에, 우리는 종종 멈추어 서서 “이 이야기는 어디에서 온 것일까?” 하고 묻지 않습니다.
Today we enter the Christmas story somewhere in the middle: Christ has been born and has received His first visitors. The Wisemen are still on their way. But as we all know from primary school, the story actually begins much earlier when the Angel Gabriel tells Mary she is going to give birth to the Son of God. We’re so familiar with this story that we rarely stop and ask ourselves, “Where does it come from?”
그 대천사와 마리아의 대화를 직접 목격한 이는 단 두 분뿐이었습니다. 그리고 그 이야기를 성 루카에게 전해 준 분이 가브리엘이었을 것이라고는 생각하기 어렵습니다. 마찬가지로 그리스도께서 탄생하실 때에도 그 광경을 지켜보는 큰 군중은 없었습니다. 아직 제자들도 없었습니다. 그 일을 다른 이들에게 전해 줄 만큼 곁에 오래 머물러 있었던 분은 단 한 분, 곧 예수님의 어머니 마리아뿐이었습니다.
Only two people witnessed that conversation between the Archangel and Mary. And I don’t think it was Gabriel who helped Luke to write it down. In the same way, when Christ is born, there aren’t great crowds to witness the event. There are no disciples yet. Only one person was around long enough to tell others about it: Jesus’ mother, Mary.
성 루카는 목자들이 떠난 뒤, 마리아가 이 모든 일을 마음속에 간직하며 곰곰이 되새겼다고 전합니다. 이는 어떤 아이의 탄생이라 하더라도 참으로 특별한 이야기였을 것입니다. 집을 떠나 말구유에 누워 계셨고, 목자들의 방문을 받으셨기 때문입니다. 그러나 그 아이가 하느님이셨다는 사실을 생각하면, 그 신비로움은 더욱 큽니다.
St Luke even tells us that when the shepherds left, Mary treasured up all of these things, pondering them in her heart. This would have been an extraordinary story of the birth of any child: away from home, lying in a manger, visited by shepherds. It’s even more extraordinary when we consider that child was God.
그러니 마리아가 그 모든 일을 깊이 생각할 시간이 필요했던 것도 당연합니다. 그리고 마리아에게는 시간이 있었습니다. 목자들은 다녀가고 떠났으며, 동방 박사들도 와서 자기 고향으로 돌아갈 것입니다. 그러나 모두가 떠난 뒤에도 마리아는 아이와 함께 남아 있었습니다. 그녀는 아이를 돌보고, 젖을 먹이며, 가르치고, 자라는 모습을 지켜보았고, 마침내는 그분에게서 스스로 배우게 됩니다.
No wonder that Mary needed time to think about all that had happened. And she had the advantage of time. The shepherds visit and leave. The wisemen will come and return to their homes. But Mary stays with her child when everyone else has gone. And she cares for her child, she feeds him, and teaches him, and watches him grow, and in time learns from Him herself.
이것이 바로 하느님께서 사람이 되셨다는 말의 의미입니다. 하느님께서는 먼저 아기가 되셨고, 그다음에는 아이가 되셨으며, 청소년이 되셨고, 삼십 년 동안 평범한 인간의 삶을 사셨습니다. 어린 시절의 그분은 아직 하느님 나라를 선포하지도, 기적을 행하지도 않으셨습니다. 죄는 없으셨지만, 여느 아이들이 하는 평범한 일들을 하셨습니다. 그러나 그렇게 지극히 평범해 보이던 그 모든 시간 동안에도, 그분은 여전히 만물을 창조하신 분이셨습니다. 태초에 계셨던 하느님, 만물이 그분을 통하여 창조된 바로 그 말씀이셨습니다.
That’s what it means to say that God became Man. That first he became a baby, and then a child, then a teenager, and he lived an ordinary human life for 30 years. As a child he wasn’t yet preaching about the Kingdom of God or working miracles. He did the ordinary things that ordinary children do, though without sin. Yet in all that time that he looked so ordinary, he was, still, the creator of all things. He was still God who was in the beginning. Through whom all things were made.
그러나 마리아는 이 모든 일을 마음속에 간직하며 되새겼습니다. 그리고 아드님이 자라시는 동안에도 계속 그렇게 하였을 것입니다. 그렇게 하면서 그녀는 점점 그분을 닮아 갔습니다. 성 요한 헨리 뉴먼은 마리아에 대해 이렇게 말했습니다. “우리는 사랑하는 사람들과 함께 살다 보면, 서로 얼마나 닮아 가는지를 매일같이 보게 됩니다.” 마리아는 누구보다도 오랫동안, 그리고 누구보다도 가까이에서 그리스도와 함께 살았습니다.
But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. And she must have continued to do so long after His birth, as her child grew. As she did so she became more like Him. St John Henry Newman observed of her, “We see every day how like people get to each other, who live with those they love.” Mary lived closer to Christ and with Him for longer than anyone else ever has.
마리아가 아드님을 닮게 된 것은 그분을 연구했기 때문도, 그분에 대해 책을 읽었기 때문도 아니었습니다. 그녀는 그분을 품고 다니며, 그분과 함께 살았기 때문입니다. 그것은 우리 모두가 초대받고 있는 삶이기도 합니다. 마리아는 성탄의 의미와 하느님께서 사람이 되신 신비를 한순간에 모두 이해하지는 못했습니다. 그녀의 이해는 세월에 걸쳐, 하느님이시며 동시에 사람이신 그 특별한 아드님과 함께한 평범한 일상 속에서 서서히 형성되었습니다. 그분은 말씀이 사람이 되신 분, 성부의 외아드님이십니다.
She became like her Son, not because she studied Him, or read about Him, but because she carried Him around with her, and lived with Him as we are all invited to do. She didn’t understand the meaning of Christmas and the mystery of God becoming Man all at once. Her understanding was formed slowly, over years of ordinary life lived in the company of her extraordinary Son, who is both God and Man. The Word made Flesh. The only Son of the Father.
그렇다면 우리가 단 하루, 혹은 한평생 안에 그리스도가 누구이신지를 완전히 깨달을 수 있다고 기대할 수 있겠습니까? 성탄은 집으로 돌아가는 순간 끝나는 것이 아닙니다. 우리는 이 신비를 인정하고, 마리아처럼 이 모든 일을 마음속에 간직하며 되새겨야 합니다. 오늘 그리스도를 찾아뵙고 아무 변화 없이 돌아가지 마십시오. 하느님께서 어떠한 분이신지, 이 아기가 바로 그분이십니다. 마리아처럼 그분을 품고 다니며, 그분과 함께 살고, 그분에게서 배우며, 그리하여 그분을 닮아 가십시오.
How much less will we have grasped the entire mystery of who Christ is in a single day or even in a single lifetime. Christmas isn’t done when we return home. We must acknowledge the mystery and ponder these things in our hearts. Don’t visit Christ today and go home unchanged. Whatever God is, this child is. Like Mary, carry Him with you, live with Him and learn from Him and so become like Him.
