가톨릭 교회 교리서 523 세례자 요한은 주님의 길을 닦기 위하여[마태 3,3 참조] 파견된 주님 직전의 선구자이다.[사도 13,24 참조] “지극히 높으신 분의 예언자”(루카 1,76)인 요한은 모든 예언자를 능가하는[루카 7,26 참조] 마지막 예언자이며[마태 11,13 참조] 복음의 시작이다.[사도 1,21-22; 루카 16,16 참조] 그는 자기 어머니의 태중에서부터 세상에 오시는 그리스도께 인사를 드렸고,[루카 1,41 참조] “세상의 죄를 없애시는 하느님의 어린양”(요한 1,29)이라고 부른 “신랑의 친구”(요한 3,29)가 됨을 기뻐했다. “엘리야의 영과 힘을 지니고”(루카 1,17) 예수님에 앞서 온 그는 설교와 회개의 세례, 그리고 마침내 자신의 순교로 예수님을 증언한다.[마르 6,17-29 참조]

Catechism of the Catholic Church 523 St. John the Baptist is the Lord's immediate precursor or forerunner, sent to prepare his way.Cf. Acts 13:24; Mt 3:3. "Prophet of the Most High", John surpasses all the prophets, of whom he is the last.Lk 1:76; cf. 7:26; Mt 11:13. He inaugurates the Gospel, already from his mother's womb welcomes the coming of Christ, and rejoices in being "the friend of the bridegroom", whom he points out as "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world".Jn 1 29; cf. Acts 1:22; Lk 1:41; 16:16; Jn 3:29. Going before Jesus "in the spirit and power of Elijah", John bears witness to Christ in his preaching, by his Baptism of conversion, and through his martyrdom.Lk 1:17; cf. 본기도 하느님, 하느님 백성이 주님의 성탄을 간절히 기다리오니 저희가 구원의 큰 기쁨을 누리며 즐거운 마음으로 이 축제를 맞이하게 하소서. 성부와 성령과 함께 천주로서 영원히 살아 계시며 다스리시는 성자 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 통하여 비나이다.

Collect O God, who see how your people  faithfully await the feast of the Lord's Nativity, enable us, we pray, to attain the joys of so great a salvation and to celebrate them always with solemn worship and glad rejoicing. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever.

제1독서 : 이사야서 35,1-6ㄴ.10 1 광야와 메마른 땅은 기뻐하여라. 사막은 즐거워하며 꽃을 피워라. 2 수선화처럼 활짝 피고 즐거워 뛰며 환성을 올려라. 레바논의 영광과, 카르멜과 사론의 영화가 그곳에 내려 그들이 주님의 영광을, 우리 하느님의 영화를 보리라. 3 너희는 맥 풀린 손에 힘을 불어넣고 꺾인 무릎에 힘을 돋우어라. 4 마음이 불안한 이들에게 말하여라. “굳세어져라, 두려워하지 마라. 보라, 너희의 하느님을! 복수가 들이닥친다, 하느님의 보복이! 그분께서 오시어 너희를 구원하신다.” 5 그때에 눈먼 이들은 눈이 열리고 귀먹은 이들은 귀가 열리리라. 6 그때에 다리저는 이는 사슴처럼 뛰고 말못하는 이의 혀는 환성을 터뜨리리라. 10 주님께서 해방시키신 이들만 그리로 돌아오리라. 그들은 환호하며 시온에 들어서리니 끝없는 즐거움이 그들 머리 위에 넘치고 기쁨과 즐거움이 그들과 함께하여 슬픔과 탄식이 사라지리라.

First Reading : Is 35:1-6a, 10 The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. They will bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice with joyful song. The glory of Lebanon will be given to them, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing. Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy; they will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee.

Second Reading : Jas 5:7-10 Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers and sisters, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.

Gospel : Mt 11:2-11 When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, "Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?" Jesus said to them in reply, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me." As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, "What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out?  To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you. Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he."

예물 기도 주님, 이 예물을 정성껏 봉헌하며 비오니 주님께서 제정하신 거룩한 신비의 거행으로 저희 구원이 온전히 이루어지게 하소서. 우리 주 그리스도를 통하여 비나이다.

Prayer over the Offerings May the sacrifice of our worship, Lord, we pray, be offered to you unceasingly, to complete what was begun in sacred mystery and powerfully accomplish for us your saving work. Through Christ our Lord.
