Viva est loquela, cum loquuntur opera
Qui Spíritu Sancto replétur, váriis linguis lóquitur. Váriæ linguæ sunt vária de Christo testimónia, útpote humílitas, paupértas, patiéntia et obœdiéntia, quibus tunc lóquimur, cum eas in nobis ipsis áliis osténdimus. Viva est loquéla cum loquúntur ópera. Cessent, óbsecro, verba, loquántur ópera. Verbis sumus pleni, sed opéribus vácui, et ídeo a Dómino maledícti, quia ipse maledíxit ficúlneæ in qua non invénit fructum sed fólia tantum. «Lex, inquit Gregórius, prædicatóri pósita est, ut ea quæ prǽdicat operétur». Frustra iactat legis notítiam, qui opéribus déstruit doctrínam.
Sed Apóstoli loquebántur prout Spíritus Sanctus dabat éloqui illis. Beátus qui lóquitur prout dat Spíritus Sanctus, non prout suus ánimus! Sunt enim quidam qui ex suo spíritu loquúntur, verba aliórum furántur et ea ut sua propónunt et sibi attríbuunt. De tálibus et iis simílibus dicit Dóminus in Ieremía: Ecce ego ad prophétas, qui furántur verba mea unusquísque a próximo suo. Ecce ego ad prophétas, dicit Dóminus, qui assúmunt linguas suas et aiunt: Dicit Dóminus; ecce ego ad prophétas somniántes mendácium, ait Dóminus, qui narravérunt ea et seduxérunt pópulum meum in mendácio suo et in miráculis suis; cum ego non misíssem eos nec mandássem eis, qui nihil profuérunt pópulo huic, dicit Dóminus.
Loquámur ergo prout Spíritus Sanctus déderit éloqui nobis, ipsum humíliter et devóte postulántes, quátenus grátiam suam infúndat, ut diem Pentecóstes in quinque sénsuum perfectióne et decálogi observatióne compleámus, et spíritu veheménti contritiónis repleámur, et linguis ígneis confessiónis accendámur, ut accénsi et illumináti in splendóribus sanctórum, Deum trinum et unum vidére mereámur.

성령으로 충만한 사람은 여러 가지 언어로 말합니다. 이 여러 가지 언어란 그리스도를 증거해 주는 겸손, 가난, 인내 그리고 순종입니다. 우리가 생활에서 이들을 실천할 때 그 실천을 통하여 여러 가지 언어를 말하게 됩니다. 행동이 뒤 따를 때 입으로 하는 말은 효과가 있습니다. 입은 다물고 행동으로 말합시다. 우리는 불행히도 말로는 부풀어 있고 행동에는 텅 비어 있습니다. 이 때문에 주님께서는 잎사귀만 있고 열매는 하나도 없는 무화과나무를 저주하신 것처럼 우리도 저주하실 것입니다. 그레고리오가 말하는 것처럼 “설교자에게는 법이 하나 있습니다. 설교하는 바를 실천해야 한다는 것입니다.” 가르치는 것을 행동으로 파괴시킨다면, 사람이 법을 안다고 자랑하는 것을 행동으로 파괴시킨다면, 사람이 법을 안다고 자랑하는 것은 쓸모 없는 일입니다.
“사도들의 마음은 성령으로 가득 차서 성령이 시키는 대로 여러 가지 언어로 말하기 시작하였습니다.” 인간의 영이 지시하는 대로 하지 않고 성령의 감도에 따라 말하는 이는 복됩니다. 그러나 자기 영이 지시하는 대로 말하는 사람들이 있습니다. 그들은 다른 사람의 말을 도용하여 마치 자기 말인 것처럼 넘겨줍니다. 주님께서는 이와 같은 사람들에 대해 예레미아를 통하여 말씀하십니다. “내가 똑똑히 일러둔다. 예언자들이 서로 내 말을 남의 입에서 훔쳐다가 떠벌이는데 결코 그냥 두지 않으리라. 내가 똑똑히 일러둔다. 이런 예언자들이 내 말을 한답시고 혀를 놀리는데, 결코 그냥 두지 않으리라. 내가 똑똑히 일러둔다. 이런 예언자들이 개꿈을 꾸고 거짓말로 허풍을 떨어 가며 해몽을 하여 나의 백성을 속이는데, 결코 그냥 두지 않으리라. 나는 그런 말을 하라고 그것들을 보낸 적이 없다. 그것들은 이 백성에게 백해 무익한 자들이다. 똑똑히 들어라.”
성령이 지시하는 대로 말하도록 합시다. 우리의 오관을 완전하게 하고 십계명을 준수하여 오순절(성령 강림)을 다시 성취하도록 당신 은총을 내려 주십사고 성령께 겸손히 또 열렬히 청합시다. 예리한 통회의 마음을 충만케 하시고 참된 신앙을 고백하는 혀 같은 불길을 우리 마음에 주시어, 성도들의 광채로 불타 오르고 조명되는 가운데 삼위 일체이신 하느님을 뵐 수 있게 해주시기를 청합시다.

Actions speak louder than words
The man who is filled with the Holy Spirit speaks in different languages. These different languages are different ways of witnessing to Christ, such as humility, poverty, patience and obedience; we speak in those languages when we reveal in ourselves these virtues to others. Actions speak louder than words; let your words teach and your actions speak. We are full of words but empty of actions, and therefore are cursed by the Lord, since he himself cursed the fig tree when he found no fruit but only leaves. Gregory says: “A law is laid upon the preacher to practise what he preaches.” It is useless for a man to flaunt his knowledge of the law if he undermines its teaching by his actions.
But the apostles spoke as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech. Happy the man whose words issue from the Holy Spirit and not from himself! For some men speak as their own character dictates, but steal the words of others and present them as their own and claim the credit for them. The Lord refers to such men and others like them in Jeremiah: So, then, I have a quarrel with the prophets that steal my words from each other. I have a quarrel with the prophets, says the Lord, who have only to move their tongues to utter oracles. I have a quarrel with the prophets who make prophecies out of lying dreams, who recount them and lead my people astray with their lies and their pretensions. I certainly never sent them or commissioned them, and they serve no good purpose for this people, says the Lord.
We should speak, then, as the Holy Spirit gives us the gift of speech. Our humble and sincere request to the Spirit for ourselves should be that we may bring the day of Pentecost to fulfilment, insofar as he infuses us with his grace, by using our bodily senses in a perfect manner and by keeping the commandments. Likewise we shall request that we may be filled with a keen sense of sorrow and with fiery tongues for confessing the faith, so that our deserved reward may be to stand in the blazing splendour of the saints and to look upon the triune God.

誰充滿了聖神便會講各種語言。這些不同的語言便是為基督所作的各種見證，例如謙遜、貧窮、忍耐和服從。當我們把我們身上這些美德顯示給他人時，便是在說各種語言。當行動在說話時，言語才是生活的。我請求你們，務要使言語三緘其口，而使行動大聲疾呼。我們滿口好話，行為却空空如也；因此吾主才詛咒我們，祂曾詛咒一棵枝葉茂密而不結果的無花果樹。聖額我略說：「法律頒佈給宣講者，要他實踐他所宣講的。」誰以個人的行動摧毀了他的講勸，而向人傳播對法律的體認，只是徒勞無功。
可是宗徒們是「照聖神所賜的語言恩惠而說話」。那按聖神的恩賜、而不照個人的私意去說話的，才是有福的！因為有些人是按自己的喜好而說話，他們拾人牙慧，將別人的話當作是自己的話。上主藉耶肋米亞先知的口，論到這些人和類似的人說：「我要懲罰那些先知，他們互相窈取我的話。上主說：我要懲罰那些先知，他們只會轉動舌頭道：上主的話，上主這樣說。我要懲罰那些先知，他們預言並傳述幻夢，以自己的謊言妄語迷惑我的人民；我從未派遣他們，也未曾對他們有所吩咐，他們對這人民毫無用途，上主說。」
所以，我們要照聖神所賜給我們的語言之恩而說話。我們要謙遜而虔誠地祈求聖神在我們內廣施恩寵，使我們藉著遵守十誡，善用五官，使五旬節實現在我們當中。我們也懇求使我們充滿強烈的悔罪精神和點燃的火舌，去承認我們的信仰。如此，我們受到點燃和光照，才能在「諸聖的光輝中」，得以享見三位一體的天主。
