1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”

1 그때에 제자들이 예수님께 다가와, “하늘 나라에서는 누가 가장 큰 사람입니까?” 하고 물었다.

2 And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them,

2 그러자 예수님께서 어린이 하나를 불러 그들 가운데에 세우시고

3 and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

3 이르셨다. “내가 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 회개하여 어린이처럼 되지 않으면, 결코 하늘 나라에 들어가지 못한다.

4 Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

4 그러므로 누구든지 이 어린이처럼 자신을 낮추는 이가 하늘 나라에서 가장 큰 사람이다.

5 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me;

5 또 누구든지 이런 어린이 하나를 내 이름으로 받아들이면 나를 받아들이는 것이다.”

6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

6 “나를 믿는 이 작은 이들 가운데 하나라도 죄짓게 하는 자는, 연자매를 목에 달고 바다 깊은 곳에 빠지는 편이 낫다.

7 “Woe to the world for temptations to sin! For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the man by whom the temptation comes!

7 불행하여라, 남을 죄짓게 하는 일이 많은 이 세상! 사실 남을 죄짓게 하는 일은 일어나기 마련이다. 그러나 불행하여라, 남을 죄짓게 하는 일을 하는 사람!

8 And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire.

8 네 손이나 발이 너를 죄짓게 하거든 그것을 잘라 던져 버려라. 두 손이나 두 발을 가지고 영원한 불에 던져지는 것보다, 불구자나 절름발이로 생명에 들어가는 편이 낫다.

9 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell of fire.

9 또 네 눈이 너를 죄짓게 하거든 그것을 빼 던져 버려라. 두 눈을 가지고 불타는 지옥에 던져지는 것보다, 한 눈으로 생명에 들어가는 편이 낫다.”

10 “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

10 “너희는 이 작은 이들 가운데 하나라도 업신여기지 않도록 주의하여라. 내가 너희에게 말한다. 하늘에서 그들의 천사들이 하늘에 계신 내 아버지의 얼굴을 늘 보고 있다.”

(11) For the Son of man came to save the lost

(11) 사람의 아들은 잃어버린 것들을 구하러 왔기 때문이다.

12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go in search of the one that went astray?

12 “너희는 어떻게 생각하느냐? 어떤 사람에게 양 백 마리가 있는데 그 가운데 한 마리가 길을 잃으면, 아흔아홉 마리를 산에 남겨 둔 채 길 잃은 양을 찾아 나서지 않느냐?

13 And if he finds it, truly, I say to you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.

13 그가 양을 찾게 되면, 내가 진실로 너희에게 말하는데, 길을 잃지 않은 아흔아홉 마리보다 그 한 마리를 두고 더 기뻐한다.

14 So it is not the will of my Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

14 이와 같이 이 작은 이들 가운데 하나라도 잃어버리는 것은 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 뜻이 아니다.”

15 “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother.

15 “네 형제가 너에게 죄를 짓거든, 가서 단둘이 만나 그를 타일러라. 그가 네 말을 들으면 네가 그 형제를 얻은 것이다.

16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every word may be confirmed by the evidence of two or three witnesses.

16 그러나 그가 네 말을 듣지 않거든 한 사람이나 두 사람을 더 데리고 가거라. ‘모든 일을 둘이나 세 증인의 말로 확정 지어야 하기’ 때문이다.

17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

17 그가 그들의 말을 들으려고 하지 않거든 교회에 알려라. 교회의 말도 들으려고 하지 않거든 그를 다른 민족 사람이나 세리처럼 여겨라.

18 Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

18 내가 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 너희가 무엇이든지 땅에서 매면 하늘에서도 매일 것이고, 너희가 무엇이든지 땅에서 풀면 하늘에서도 풀릴 것이다.”

19 Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.

19 “내가 또 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 너희 가운데 두 사람이 이 땅에서 마음을 모아 무엇이든 청하면, 하늘에 계신 내 아버지께서 이루어 주실 것이다.

20 For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”

20 두 사람이나 세 사람이라도 내 이름으로 모인 곳에는 나도 함께 있기 때문이다.”

21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?”

21 그때에 베드로가 예수님께 다가와, “주님, 제 형제가 저에게 죄를 지으면 몇 번이나 용서해 주어야 합니까? 일곱 번까지 해야 합니까?” 하고 물었다.

22  Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy times seven.

22 예수님께서 그에게 대답하셨다. “내가 너에게 말한다. 일곱 번이 아니라 일흔일곱 번까지라도 용서해야 한다.”

23  “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants.

23 “그러므로 하늘 나라는 자기 종들과 셈을 하려는 어떤 임금에게 비길 수 있다.

24 When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents;

24 임금이 셈을 하기 시작하자 만 탈렌트를 빚진 사람 하나가 끌려왔다.

25 and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made.

25 그런데 그가 빚을 갚을 길이 없으므로, 주인은 그 종에게 자신과 아내와 자식과 그 밖에 가진 것을 다 팔아서 갚으라고 명령하였다.

26 So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’

26 그러자 그 종이 엎드려 절하며, ‘제발 참아 주십시오. 제가 다 갚겠습니다.’ 하고 말하였다.

27 And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt.

27 그 종의 주인은 가엾은 마음이 들어, 그를 놓아주고 부채도 탕감해 주었다.

28 But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’

28 그런데 그 종이 나가서 자기에게 백 데나리온을 빚진 동료 하나를 만났다. 그러자 그를 붙들어 멱살을 잡고 ‘빚진 것을 갚아라.’ 하고 말하였다.

29 So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’

29 그의 동료는 엎드려서, ‘제발 참아 주게. 내가 갚겠네.’ 하고 청하였다.

30 He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt.

30 그러나 그는 들어주려고 하지 않았다. 그리고 가서 그 동료가 빚진 것을 다 갚을 때까지 감옥에 가두었다.

31 When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place.

31 동료들이 그렇게 벌어진 일을 보고 너무 안타까운 나머지, 주인에게 가서 그 일을 죄다 일렀다.

32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me;

32 그러자 주인이 그 종을 불러들여 말하였다. ‘이 악한 종아, 네가 청하기에 나는 너에게 빚을 다 탕감해 주었다.

33 and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’

33 내가 너에게 자비를 베푼 것처럼 너도 네 동료에게 자비를 베풀었어야 하지 않느냐?’

34 And in anger his lord delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all his debt.

34 그러고 나서 화가 난 주인은 그를 고문 형리에게 넘겨 빚진 것을 다 갚게 하였다.

35 So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”

35 너희가 저마다 자기 형제를 마음으로부터 용서하지 않으면, 하늘의 내 아버지께서도 너희에게 그와 같이 하실 것이다.”
