1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him.

1 예수님께서는 그 군중을 보시고 산으로 오르셨다. 그분께서 자리에 앉으시자 제자들이 그분께 다가왔다.

2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

2 예수님께서 입을 여시어 그들을 이렇게 가르치셨다.

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

3 “행복하여라, 마음이 가난한 사람들! 하늘 나라가 그들의 것이다.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

4 행복하여라, 슬퍼하는 사람들! 그들은 위로를 받을 것이다.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

5 행복하여라, 온유한 사람들! 그들은 땅을 차지할 것이다.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

6 행복하여라, 의로움에 주리고 목마른 사람들! 그들은 흡족해질 것이다.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

7 행복하여라, 자비로운 사람들! 그들은 자비를 입을 것이다.

8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

8 행복하여라, 마음이 깨끗한 사람들! 그들은 하느님을 볼 것이다.

9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.

9 행복하여라, 평화를 이루는 사람들! 그들은 하느님의 자녀라 불릴 것이다.

10 “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

10 행복하여라, 의로움 때문에 박해를 받는 사람들! 하늘 나라가 그들의 것이다.

11 “Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.

11 사람들이 나 때문에 너희를 모욕하고 박해하며, 너희를 거슬러 거짓으로 온갖 사악한 말을 하면, 너희는 행복하다!

12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

12 기뻐하고 즐거워하여라. 너희가 하늘에서 받을 상이 크다. 사실 너희에 앞서 예언자들도 그렇게 박해를 받았다.”

13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men.

13 “너희는 세상의 소금이다. 그러나 소금이 제맛을 잃으면 무엇으로 다시 짜게 할 수 있겠느냐? 아무 쓸모가 없으니 밖에 버려져 사람들에게 짓밟힐 따름이다.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid.

14 너희는 세상의 빛이다. 산 위에 자리 잡은 고을은 감추어질 수 없다.

15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.

15 등불은 켜서 함지 속이 아니라 등경 위에 놓는다. 그렇게 하여 집 안에 있는 모든 사람을 비춘다.

16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

16 이와 같이 너희의 빛이 사람들 앞을 비추어, 그들이 너희의 착한 행실을 보고 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지를 찬양하게 하여라.”

17 “Think not that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish them but to fulfil them.

17 “내가 율법이나 예언서들을 폐지하러 온 줄로 생각하지 마라. 폐지하러 온 것이 아니라 오히려 완성하러 왔다.

18 For truly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the law until all is accomplished.

18 내가 진실로 너희에게 말한다. 하늘과 땅이 없어지기 전에는, 모든 것이 이루어질 때까지 율법에서 한 자 한 획도 없어지지 않을 것이다.

19 Whoever then relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but he who does them and teaches them shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

19 그러므로 이 계명들 가운데에서 가장 작은 것 하나라도 어기고 또 사람들을 그렇게 가르치는 자는 하늘 나라에서 가장 작은 자라고 불릴 것이다. 그러나 스스로 지키고 또 그렇게 가르치는 이는 하늘 나라에서 큰사람이라고 불릴 것이다.

20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

20 내가 너희에게 말한다. 너희의 의로움이 율법 학자들과 바리사이들의 의로움을 능가하지 않으면, 결코 하늘 나라에 들어가지 못할 것이다.”

21 “You have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not kill; and whoever kills shall be liable to judgment.’

21 “‘살인해서는 안 된다. 살인한 자는 재판에 넘겨진다.’고 옛사람들에게 이르신 말씀을 너희는 들었다.

22 But I say to you that every one who is angry with his brother shall be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother shall be liable to the council, and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be liable to the hell of fire.

22 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 자기 형제에게 성을 내는 자는 누구나 재판에 넘겨질 것이다. 그리고 자기 형제에게 ‘바보!’라고 하는 자는 최고 의회에 넘겨지고, ‘멍청이!’라고 하는 자는 불붙는 지옥에 넘겨질 것이다.

23 So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you,

23 그러므로 네가 제단에 예물을 바치려고 하다가, 거기에서 형제가 너에게 원망을 품고 있는 것이 생각나거든,

24 leave your gift there before the altar and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

24 예물을 거기 제단 앞에 놓아두고 물러가 먼저 그 형제와 화해하여라. 그런 다음에 돌아와서 예물을 바쳐라.

25 Make friends quickly with your accuser, while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison;

25 너를 고소한 자와 함께 법정으로 가는 도중에 얼른 타협하여라. 그러지 않으면 고소한 자가 너를 재판관에게 넘기고 재판관은 너를 형리에게 넘겨, 네가 감옥에 갇힐 것이다.

26 truly, I say to you, you will never get out till you have paid the last penny.

26 내가 진실로 너에게 말한다. 네가 마지막 한 닢까지 갚기 전에는 결코 거기에서 나오지 못할 것이다.”

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’

27 “‘간음해서는 안 된다.’고 이르신 말씀을 너희는 들었다.

28 But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

28 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 음욕을 품고 여자를 바라보는 자는 누구나 이미 마음으로 그 여자와 간음한 것이다.

29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell.

29 네 오른눈이 너를 죄짓게 하거든 그것을 빼어 던져 버려라. 온몸이 지옥에 던져지는 것보다 지체 하나를 잃는 것이 낫다.

30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

30 또 네 오른손이 너를 죄짓게 하거든 그것을 잘라 던져 버려라. 온몸이 지옥에 던져지는 것보다 지체 하나를 잃는 것이 낫다.”

31 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’

31 “‘자기 아내를 버리는 자는 그 여자에게 이혼장을 써 주어라.’ 하신 말씀이 있다.

32 But I say to you that every one who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity,[h] makes her an adulteress; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

32 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 불륜을 저지른 경우를 제외하고 아내를 버리는 자는 누구나 그 여자가 간음하게 만드는 것이다. 또 버림받은 여자와 혼인하는 자도 간음하는 것이다.”

33 “Again you have heard that it was said to the men of old, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform to the Lord what you have sworn.’

33 “‘거짓 맹세를 해서는 안 된다. 네가 맹세한 대로 주님께 해 드려라.’ 하고 옛사람들에게 이르신 말씀을 너희는 또 들었다.

34 But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,

34 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 아예 맹세하지 마라. 하늘을 두고도 맹세하지 마라. 하느님의 옥좌이기 때문이다.

35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

35 땅을 두고도 맹세하지 마라. 그분의 발판이기 때문이다. 예루살렘을 두고도 맹세하지 마라. 위대하신 임금님의 도성이기 때문이다.

36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.

36 네 머리를 두고도 맹세하지 마라. 네가 머리카락 하나라도 희거나 검게 할 수 없기 때문이다.

37 Let what you say be simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything more than this comes from evil.

37 너희는 말할 때에 ‘예.’ 할 것은 ‘예.’ 하고, ‘아니요.’ 할 것은 ‘아니요.’라고만 하여라. 그 이상의 것은 악에서 나오는 것이다.”

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’

38 “‘눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로.’ 하고 이르신 말씀을 너희는 들었다.

39 But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also;

39 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 악인에게 맞서지 마라. 오히려 누가 네 오른뺨을 치거든 다른 뺨마저 돌려 대어라.

40 and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well;

40 또 너를 재판에 걸어 네 속옷을 가지려는 자에게는 겉옷까지 내주어라.

41 and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

41 누가 너에게 천 걸음을 가자고 강요하거든, 그와 함께 이천 걸음을 가 주어라.

42 Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.

42 달라는 자에게 주고 꾸려는 자를 물리치지 마라.”

43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’

43 “‘네 이웃을 사랑해야 한다. 그리고 네 원수는 미워해야 한다.’고 이르신 말씀을 너희는 들었다.

44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

44 그러나 나는 너희에게 말한다. 너희는 원수를 사랑하여라. 그리고 너희를 박해하는 자들을 위하여 기도하여라.

45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

45 그래야 너희가 하늘에 계신 너희 아버지의 자녀가 될 수 있다. 그분께서는 악인에게나 선인에게나 당신의 해가 떠오르게 하시고, 의로운 이에게나 불의한 이에게나 비를 내려 주신다.

46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?

46 사실 너희가 자기를 사랑하는 이들만 사랑한다면 무슨 상을 받겠느냐? 그것은 세리들도 하지 않느냐?

47 And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

47 그리고 너희가 자기 형제들에게만 인사한다면, 너희가 남보다 잘하는 것이 무엇이겠느냐? 그런 것은 다른 민족 사람들도 하지 않느냐?

48 You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

48 그러므로 하늘의 너희 아버지께서 완전하신 것처럼 너희도 완전한 사람이 되어야 한다.”
